I took Arden to her eye specialist appointment this morning. Supposedly this eye doc specializes in pediatric eye issues. He was very weird in person, but Arden loved him, so I guess he really does specialize in talking to the little people. I felt like a bit actor in the PeeWee Herman show - a little bit. The good news is, Arden loved going to the eye doctor - she thought it was a big game. The bad news, her sty, or chalazion requires surgery to be removed. It has gotten too large and has recently started to bug her. There’s a chance it can actually rub away the outer skin of the eyelid, which would mean surgery and stitches on the lower lid - but if it stays intact, they can do the surgery, in under 5 minutes, on the inside of the lid. Hopefully she won’t remember it. On a happy note, her depth perception is 100%. . . so far it hasn’t hurt her vision. I will just be glad to have it over and done with. I’m particularly thrilled that her pre-op appointment doesn’t require a blood draw and the surgery is done without an IV - just a mask to put her out for a few minutes. Right now it’s scheduled for January 20th but we are on the cancellation list for next Tuesday if something opens up more quickly (I hate to wish some other kid would get a cold and drop out, but I REALLY do not want this thing to bust out of her eye like a miniature re-enactment of Alien, the Movie).

On another sad, and partially happy note: my Blackberry officially bit the dust today. The trackball has been problematic for a long time - it kept popping out, and I’d shove it back in there. I even resorted to crazy glue once when I was very desperate. Today it popped out again and I broke it completely when trying to, as they say in the South, “mash the button back in ‘er”. I am currently waiting for Mike to get home so I can go get an iPhone. I am not buying another Blackberry. Once I learned, by playing with my brother-in-law Frank’s iPhone, that Lo and Behold, I can process orders on this thing (!!!!) I was sold.

It’s not the best time to be buying new anything, but I have no choice. I can’t even answer my own phone now. I can dial numbers, but I can’t check emails and I can’t answer the phone when it rings. It’s been pretty annoying, especially since a customer decided today to call me 16 times but would never leave a message, and therefore I had no idea who it was until she finally broke down and left her name and number in the voice mail.

It’s off to the Apple store iGo!

I’m not sad to say goodbye to 2008. I know a lot of people feel the same way. Here’s hoping that 2009 is a lot better.

That being said, we had a big party last night to celebrate the end of 2008. My aunt and uncle were visiting Mike and Anja (well, they were visiting Mia, really), so they all came over from Yorktown for the day and we had a big slumber party at the house so no one had to drive. They brought Juneau and Kodiak, their 115 lb + Alaskan Malamutes with them, and they were so well-behaved. Plus, Lily entertained herself by trying to ride Kodiak all night.

We did a fondue feast, starting with a pub cheese fondue that was about half Harp lager (delicious), followed it with beef tenderloin and shrimp with a curry sauce, creamy horseradish sauce, tzatziki and a mustard sauce. The finale was about 2 pounds of melted chocolate, cream and vanilla, with plenty of stuff to dip in it. Thankfully it took about three hours to eat, so we only half-rolled into the family room to digest. We drank a lot of wine, talked a lot of smack, and laughed hard at my mom and Aunt Paula learning to play Wii. After, Anja nearly lost the use of her left arm by playing Raving Rabbids with me, and I made a note to self not to play sports games with Anja - she’s uber competitive and really good at whatever she does. I love you, Anja!

I can’t stress enough how much the girls love Mia. They LOVE her. Lily carries her around (and is probably herniated from it) like a doll and they spend all their time petting her, kissing her, and “teaching” her things (sorry Anja, if any of those things are bad habits, like nose-picking and fingernail-biting). Lily nearly cried today when they left. She thinks Mia should just live her all the time.

We all managed to stay up til midnight making fun of each other, and playing Wii. According to Uncle Sal, his golfing on Wii mimics his real-life golfing (Mike called him double-bogey a lot last night). I was proud of my mom for attempting to learn to bowl, but man, it was rough - she had trouble releasing the ball. When she finally made it, she jumped up and down and screamed a lot, so it was worth it. I love Anja even more now because she brought me some Sander’s Hot Fudge sauce from Michigan. Nothing tastes like that cold, depressed gray state like Sander’s, and it’s delicious!!!

This morning we got up and had a brunch at Silver Diner before the clan left for Yorktown, and mom and dad for their house. Mike and I promptly fell asleep for two hours - we hope the girls slept too, but I was basically unconscious. I can’t tell if I’m coming down with something (my bones and throat hurts) or if I’m just beyond tired. It was worth it however - I love having my family around and it’s rare that we can see each other in larger groups like that.

Below are some pictures of the festivities, including a few from a visit we made to Rainbow Station to see Lily’s teacher from last year, Ms. April.

I’ll post my usual 2008 recap later. For now, pictures. And a video of my mom trying to bowl!

Lots more New Year’s posts coming (lucky you!!!) but I just wanted to add a note here about my general rules on my blog. I’ve had the same person randomly commented in rude tones or sending me links to articles about weird things - I know it’s the same person because I use Google Analytics on this site as well as a fairly robust user tracking system on the back end of my blog platform. This person, up until recently, was sort of on the fence with rudeness. It was apparent to me that they have some sort of issue with me, but I don’t really care. If they feel like reading someone’s blog who annoys them, and they can keep it in check, my feeling is: whatever.

However, the anonymous stuff bugs me. Other people have disagreed with me (fine) or argued with me (fine) and a few have flamed me (not fine). But I never delete comments or ban someone from the site for disagreeing - especially when they are brave enough to speak their mind and leave a real email address or url. The internet makes it far too easy to hide behind your computer and spew nastiness with anonymity, so my new rule for 2009 is: if you post a rude comment on my blog, and you choose to do so with fake email addresses or urls, I will ban you. I may also delete your comment unless I have too much fun being sarcastic in your general direction. Lucky for me, my blog software allows me to block anyone’s IP address.

Anyway, I can think of many worse punishments than being banned from my blog, but I am not going to let some troll who won’t stand up behind what they say continue to hang out here. I have enough yuck in my life - I don’t need any additional, especially here.

That is all!

I have lots to say but my day can be summed up in one experience.

I went to Hell today - meaning Wal-Mart. The parking lot was jammed, as usual. The one spot that was open was seriously small because the person next to me had parked at an angle. I did the best I could to get in straight and still leave room to open the doors. I’m sure you can see where this is going.

After an hour in Hell, I am unloading groceries and kids into the car when I see a scrawled note on a Tropical Smoothie napkin. It said, “Hello. It’s terrible that you have chosen to reproduce (he must have seen the car seats) and that you will be bringing more terrible drivers into the world. You are selfish and inconsiderate and you should really learn to drive better. Happy New Year.”

That is one angry dude who takes the time to write a note like that. Happy New Year to you too, asshole!

Phew, I don’t know how my mom entertained all those people for all those years. I’m TIRED. Halfway through today I wanted to take a nap and hide but alas, could not.

All that exhaustion was worth it, however. We all had a great Christmas. Yesterday we had an early dinner of delicious filet mignon (from Fresh Market - highly recommend their meat - it’s never been anything other than awesome), twice-baked potatoes and salad.

After we hit the last few houses on the tacky light tour, laid out cookies for Santa, opened a few presents, and sent the girls to bed. Mike made his new tradition - Stingers, a drink from my dad’s previous life as a fighter pilot. It’s Brandy and Creme de Menthe, and according to my mom, it makes people “mean” when they drink it. According to Mike, it just make people drunk when they drink it.

We then wrapped the last remaining gifts and watched an uplifiting documentary on Hitler’s genocide (it was part of the World at War series we had bought for my dad). Nothing like interviews with concentration camp victims to lift your spirits.

The girls managed to stay in bed til 7, so after some spazzing, we sicked them on the presents. The big hits were the dolls my dad bought them - very large Alexander Girls dolls, one with brown hair and eyes like Lily, one with blond hair and blue eyes like Arden. They thought they were awesome. They loved their princesses and ponies from my sister and Lily got a Razor scooter. We had a little bit of downtime before heading to our neighbor’s house. They had invited us for appetizers, so we hung out there for a couple of hours and let the girls destroy their house while we ate their food.

Around 3, Mike’s sister and her family showed up, and we had another round of gifts. Arden and Lily got matching tutus from Christine, and Arden will be wearing hers constantly from now on.

The weather here was gorgeous - warm and sunny - so we all headed out and played football. Arden and Lily rode their scooters and bikes. Lily looked especially stellar in her helmet, knee and elbow pads, Christmas dress and tennis shoes:

A wild, loud dinner ensued. We had the traditional Kimler lasagna and 42 pounds of dessert. My mom likes to make these chocolate nut “bags” that are made of puff pastry, then drizzled with a fresh raspberry sauce. They are delish, but we realized that instead of puff pastry, we had bought phyllo dough. Ooops! I figured, how hard can it be to make puff pastry from scratch? Turns out, not that hard. So I did a little internet research and found a recipe that received good reviews. I whipped some butter, flour and sour cream together, chilled it, and voila. With a little help from Voz’s mom (she’s an expert dough-roller), we made the puff pastry bags and they were really good. Christine had made a chocolate cake from scratch, so we had that too. (side note - all the weight I’ve lost came back tonight - happy holidays waistline!)

It took about two hours to clean up the kitchen and sunroom, but it was worth it. I’m now going to drink a copious amount of alcohol and pass out. Merry Christmas everyone.

I finally remembered my camera. Richmond is known for the tacky lights tour - in fact, the house I photographed last night was featured on a HGTV show about houses that can be seen from outer space (or something like that). I actually really enjoy the insanity of the tour, but I could do without the whining from the peanut gallery in the backseat. Truth be told they might be a little young to appreciate the uber-insanity of the tour.

I also added more pictures from our fun gift exhange with the Yeagers in my flickr badge below. I’ll be putting all my holiday photos there too so keep checking it if you like to look at my kids being dorks. We had a great time seeing Jennifer, Sophia and Troy before they leave for New York. The girls loved their gifts (Jenn, Lily is STILL doing the art project you got her, and wanted to sleep with it tonight), and Sophia seemed to enjoy being bossed around by my daughters. We’re trying to talk them into coming back for New Year’s Eve but I don’t see it happening . . .

It’s been a day. I’ve mentioned before the upcoming CPSIA legislation and how it’s going to effect small businesses, but until today, the reality of how it is going to effect US didn’t hit.

First, let me say that I don’t want lead in my children’s toys or my children’s clothes. That being said, I wholly support a REALISTIC approach to lead testing. For example, if every single item I use to make a onesie is certified lead-free, I don’t believe I need to test it again on the off-chance that all those items, when sewn together, will suddenly have a party and become lead-filled for the fun of it.

For those of you who aren’t aware, the legislation was done by some well-meaning politicians in a knee-jerk reaction to all the lead toys coming in from China. What’s ironic, as one of my friends so eloquently puts it, is that the legislation isn’t going to affect those big corporations who started this mess - companies that mass-produce and can afford to test. It’s going to affect people like me, and all of our manufacturers. She says, and I quote: “I can’t even come up with something coherent to say. I just followed the link on your blog and started poking around the interwebs, and here’s what I don’t get. Last year everyone was up in arms about the radioactive lead-filled dogshit toys coming from China, and so the answer is… to put small American manufacturers out of business, thereby leaving only the large companies that outsource their manufacturing to… China? What? Someone jerked their knee in government and this is the polished turd they came up with, sounds like.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

My brief synopsis, though the legislation itself is so complex you need both a Juris Doctor and a Masters in Chemistry with a concentration in Manufacturing to understand it is the following:

The upcoming CPSIA legislation will require every color and product variation for children to be tested for lead (meaning if you manufacturer a “got boob” onesie in black, red and white, even if all the products you are using are certified, you still have to pay to get it tested three times). Most of our manufacturers do not have the money to comply - each test runs between $250-$1400 depeneding on how many elements are involved. Many will go out of business in August when they are required to furnish the certificates and can’t. However, one thing I didn’t count on was what happens to the inventory we are holding. On Feb 10, 2009, we have to get preliminary certs from everyone we sell. Those can be from their raw product manufacturers (ie, someone who makes nap mats would get certs from the cotton material manufacturer and the fleece manufacturer). However, all the inventory we are holding may not comply, so we are looking at eating a shload of inventory sitting in my attic. We won’t be allowed, by law, to sell it. Did I mention that cotton has really never been a culprit for lead? Yeah, doesn’t matter.

And then what happens? What happens in August when the raw materials certified aren’t enough, and each manufacturer must test every variation of their product? An example from Boutique Cafe goes like this: “To put a real dollar amount to testing one of my products, I solicited a lab quote. I was told it was $75 to test for lead per garment component and each substrate. Coated or painted items such as buttons are $100. So my Little Red Riding Hood Shirt, a 100% cotton knit shirt with an appliqué made from 7 cotton fabrics and 2 buttons eyes would cost $625 to test for lead. Flammability testing is also required and is either $50 for a certificate per component stating it meets weight code or $100 for actual testing. So add another $400-$800 for a grand total of $1,025-$1425. in testing costs for a shirt that retails for $40. If the shirt is offered in another colorway, the same testing is required despite the fact that the same fabrics are used throughout.

Small manufacturers have no way of absorbing the price of such redundancy. And all manufacturers will be required to test a finished component/item from each batch. Easy to do in mass production—simply pull one sample from a lot of thousands. But how does one comply when your “batches” are made-to-order batches of one? SKUs will also be required for each product with a permanent label on the item itself.

CPSIA will be retroactive and takes a guilty-until-proven-innocent approach with extremely hefty fines for violators. As written, any product used by children 12 and under (such as toys, footwear, carpets, clothing, bedding, luggage, lamps, toys, books, magazines, baseball cards, consumer electronics, school supplies, office supplies, jewelry, housewares, sports equipment and so on) without the newly required certification would be deemed hazardous, whether the item poses an actual threat or not. So on February 10, 2009, any unsold merchandise (in big box stores, the corner boutique, your fabric stash, Good Will donations, etc.) will be deemed “hazardous goods” and illegal to sell unless 3rd party testing proves otherwise. By the way, there are only 14 said labs currently in the United States.”

For those manufacturers that do survive, who do you think will pay for the outrageous fees? You will - the consumer.

For my small little group of nap mat and onesie manufacturers, we are trying to band together an a.) figure out what the law is really saying and b.) survive. Here’s what you can do to educate yourself and support amending this law (thanks BoutiqueCafe.com for the list):

What can you do?
1) Email or call the CPSIA - the office of the CPSC ombudsman 888-531-9070.

7) Join others in fighting this cause.
http://cpsia-central.ning.com/notes/Notes_Home

Join the etsy community in the virtual chat with CPSIA Small Business Ombudsmen or send a handmade children’s item that will become “hazardous goods” as of 2/9/09 to Bobby Rush, founder of H.R. 4040.

I know I’ve griped about my Stepford neighborhood before. It’s a little scary - when one person puts up something fashionable, it’s worse than high school when Uber-Popular Girl wore the first pair of Gasoline Jeans two-tone acid washed jeans and everyone couldn’t get to Prange’s fast enough to buy their copies and have their very own camel-toe. Only in my neighborhood, it tends to be more subtle. For example, the epidemic of cobwebs that happens during Halloween. One person covered her bushes in webs - within 3 days, the entire street looked like a big spider had barfed up a giant white hairball on the prim landscaping. I rebelled, of course. Last year the wreath epidemic began, but didn’t come full circle until this year. It looks something like this (but this picture isn’t of a neighbor’s house, and you have to multiply the wreaths in this picture by like, 100):

Now, literally every house minus about 10% have window wreaths on EVERY AVAILABLE WINDOW. I’ve never seen so much artificial greenery in one place. Not to be outdone by each other, the neighbors now are warring over what can be DONE to the window wreaths - like adding lights, candles, giant baubles, and fake fruits. It looks like a preppy Mardi Gras on my street.

(In case you are wondering, no, we don’t have window wreaths. I may not wear black lipstick anymore, but I will not conform to the wreath police)

This year, the wreaths have been joined by herds of suburban white lit reindeers. You must have at least two - some have 4-6. Always in twos, the reindeer sometimes have moving heads which make them look like the loch ness monster at night. No, we don’t have white lit reindeers. But all the neighbors do.

So imagine, if you will, a neighborhood of 20 houses. Each house has at least 2, if not 4 or more, reindeers on the lawn. Imagine, if you will, someone deciding to spice things up a bit. Imagine, if you will, walking your 6 year old to the bus stop and seeing what can only be described as A LOT of reindeer-on-reindeer action. One of the more unfortunate houses has a reindeer gang-bang going on - one poor doe with 3 bucks mounting her from every direction. And my neighbor’s looked like this:

Apparently someone either very drunk or very young decided that reindeer porn would be funny, so they made every reindeer in the neighborhood a little more jolly. I have to agree that it was very, very funny. Juvenile, but funny. Some of my neighbors are out of town, so their reindeer have stayed in compromising positions and each time I drive by, I howl loudly and obnoxiously. Perfect.

**************************
I also volunteered at the Jingle Bell jog today. It’s basically a
<strike>Christmas</strike>
Holiday program at school where the kids wear bells sing, dance, and the teachers perform too. It was tons of fun. I would have gotten pictures, but I swear Lily is the midget of the school and is very hard to shoot when she’s buried in a bunch of gangly kids. The kids performed, and their PE teacher made the Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers dance too. It was really funny until she made us get up on stage and shake it with them. How I wished I were Jennifer then, because she has all those dance moves ingrained in her psyche. I have the rhythm of a brick. I’m posting some pictures and videos below.

Although I haven’t blogged much about it (partly because of my hand, partly because it stressed me out), my dad has had an aortic aneurysm since before my wedding in 2000. It stayed fairly small until recently, when a CT scan showed it bulging to a 5.5 cm size. Not good - and frankly dangerous.

Sometimes it helps to live where I do, because I am surrounded by doctors. My neighbor is a surgeon, and I’ve gotten to be pretty good friends with his wife. I got him a copy of my dad’s report and he recommended a local surgeon who specializes in abdominal aortic aneurysms. Not only that, he personally called the doctor and asked him to see my dad as soon as possible - which turned out to be today.

I went to the appointment today with my mom and dad. I was pretty keyed up because my dad had been making a lot of noise about not getting it fixed, and just letting it blow for a fast and painful death. The bad news at the appointment was that he could not have the less invasive stent procedure (they go up through an artery in the groin and repair the bulge that way). In my dad’s mind, he equated the words “open” surgery with “open heart surgery”, something he’s seen my brother go through a number of times and something he wanted absolutely no part of. Turns out that “open” surgery just means they have to make an incision and go about the repair the old fashioned way. Recovery time is about 6 weeks, with 1 week spent in ICU/hospital. At that point, 50% go to a rehab center - the other 50% go straight home for recovery.

The mortality rate for the surgery is between 5-8%. Meaning, 5-8 people out of every 100 die during or immediately after the surgery. The morbidity rate is a lot scarier - around 20%, which means something else could go wrong after the surgery and kill him, like failing kidneys, infection or pneumonia.

My dad decided to go for the surgery, so over the next few weeks he’ll be getting heart and kidney tests to make sure he’s strong enough. The two things he’s got going for him is he’s thin and healthy, and he’s never been a smoker (hello to Amanda and my other friends who still smoke - please stop now!). I’m relieved he’s having the surgery and will be more relieved when it’s over. I know it’s partially selfish to want him to live as long as possible, but in my opinion he still has a lot of spunk and life left in him, and I want my dad around. My daughters also adore him.

I will keep you posted as I learn more about the surgery, but for those who knew and have been helping support my concern and worries, thanks so much. It means a lot!

I ventured off to West End Ortho this morning in a cold rain, only to find out that although my appointment card said I should be there at 9.50, their computer said 8.50. I argued and bitched until they agreed to squeeze me in. All I could focus on was getting my cast off, and I didn’t care how long I had to wait. Finally I got in, they cut the cast off, and took x rays. Lo and behold, no healing had taken place, but the doc said that it would take about 6 weeks for that to happen. They put me in a slightly more comfortable splint that can be removed for showering (yay for clean hands) but needs to stay on the rest of the time.

Apparently my selective hearing ignored the part about the splint and only heard “cast off”, which I equated with being healed. Now I am trying to learn how to type with this new thing on my hand, and it’s like starting over again. I was so hoping to finally get my fingers back! Guess I should stop procrastinating and wrap gifts - I was waiting until the cast came off.

theoretically, my cast is coming off tomorrow. i hope so, because i miss typing and blogging and email communications in general. it takes me so long to write that i just avoid it. i’m a little nervous, though. i can’t bend my fingers much because of the cast, but when i try to move them, they are very, very stiff. i need my fingers back please! and in good condition!

briefly, i went to arden’s parent-teacher conference today with the famous and loveable ms. rey. arden’s doing great. it is funny to me to hear how professionals couch their “challenges” in cool terminology. areas that need improvement are learning to use tone, instead of just words, to convey nicely what she wants, and some fine motor like more practice cutting. i heard what a joy she is, and how affectionate and loving she is. i’m so proud that she has grown into a loving girl. she’s also really funny, and if we can help her learn to temper her independent and very strong-willed nature, she’ll be just fine. ms. rey said her “diva” moments happen less frequently now - which is a good sign. i also learned that she’s really excelling in spanish and has good recall on the vocabulary and the songs. i’ll have to get my mom to speak more spanish around her.

working from home has been going well. it took some getting used to, but i kind of like it. i have to stay very organized or my office gets out of control quickly, and that drives me nuts. i also heard from the county of henrico that it is forbidden to keep any kind of inventory at home. interesting. i guess all those people with ebay stores rent storage lockers. the guy at henrico county couldn’t tell me why - he had no idea why it was a rule - but eventually just changed my answer on the form. other than that blip, things have been pretty smooth.

i also went to my first real neighborhood party (non-swinger). i heard the whole “swinging” neighborhood rumor again - apparently both wyndham AND twin hickory have reputations for swinger parties. so far, i haven’t been invited to any. i don’t know whether to be offended or just greatly relieved. the neighborhood party was nice, and a lot of fun. though there is a large portion of very blonde, very wealthy, and very botoxed women in my neighborhood, there are a ton of normal women too. i had never met them, but after i did, i was relieved. i’m not the only imperfect and non-trophy-wife person on the block. yay me!

more to come - when i have ten working fingers again.
